Gardening By Season

Work with the weather, not against it. A simple seasonal guide to planting, caring, and harvesting in Kenya’s rhythm.

Full post:

Good gardening is good timing. When you plant with the season, plants struggle less, cost less to maintain, and give better results.

Kenya’s climate varies by region, but most home gardeners can plan around rainy and drier periods, heat, and light.

Why seasonal gardening matters

Higher survival rates for seedlings

Less water waste

Better harvests

Healthier soil over time

Rainy season focus

Best for: planting, transplanting, lawn recovery, leafy greens, and establishing new beds

Do this:

Prepare soil with compost before heavy rains

Plant flowers, herbs, and vegetables that love moisture

Mulch to reduce splash and weeds

Check drainage so roots don’t sit in water

Bloom note:

Rainy months are excellent for establishing landscaping beds and balcony planters plants root faster with natural water.

Drier season focus

Best for: hardy plants, succulents, deep watering routines, garden clean-up, and design work

Do this:

Water early morning or late evening

Choose drought-tolerant plants

Keep mulch on soil to hold moisture

Prune and reshape after active growth periods

A simple year-round rhythm

Start of rains

Plant. Multiply. Establish.

During rains

Weed, support young plants, watch for pests and fungal issues.

After rains

Feed soil, tidy beds, stake tall plants, plan the next round.

Dry stretch

Protect, water deeply but less often, focus on hardy beauty.

What to grow by goal

Low effort green: snake plant, aloe, pothos, rosemary

Kitchen use: dhania, mint, spinach/sukuma, spring onion

Colour: marigolds, petunias (where suitable), local seasonal blooms

Pollinator support: bee-friendly flowers help honey systems and local ecology

Nasali tip

Your garden doesn’t need to be big to be seasonal. A balcony with 4 pots can follow the same rhythm as a full yard.
